The potency of the present moment

There’s no time like the present: so the old saying goes. Well, to use another cliché, never a truer word spoken!

The potency of the present moment: This is something, which if you’re running a business or are self-employed, you become keenly aware of. All the clichés trip off the tongue: Not a moment to lose; every second counts.

That’s the thing with clichés – they are sometimes true!

Each passing moment, that moment of the present, has an enormity of scale, one in which all things are possible. This is all brought into sharper focus when running a business, even if a micro-business. You have to be ‘on the ball’ all the time, tactically and strategically; making decisions, planning decisions, making the right decision at the right moment. You’ve got to – no-one else will!

Living each moment to the fullest and wringing every last ounce of potential from that moment; needs focus and attention. But it’s worth it. One good moment can lead to another and then another – all leading to a sustained period of excellence.

This awareness of the micro level, the potency of every live moment, and you also realise just how much can be achieved in say 24 hours. And in a week ….well, sky’s the limit!

Running a business is precarious, insecure and sometimes rather scary. But it is certainly not dull. I sometimes hear people talking about their jobs; I mean their jobs as in being employed by someone else. How many times I’ve heard: “Just 20 mins till home-time” “Five minutes then dinner break, escape for an hour!” Clock watching. Being self-employed I cannot imagine such a way of thinking, wishing time away, wishing part of your existence away!

Much better - I feel anyway - to be in charge of your fate, savouring the freedom as-well as taking on the challenges. Every single, present moment, is used to fashion your own fate.

My latest news is, well its ongoing really. It is this: Putting into action, however imperfectly, imprecisely, a simple lesson.

Learn from the past, plan for the future, but you can only act in the present.
