Mid-floatation Wizz Air lands early at Doncaster Sheffield with Slovakia route
Yorkshire passengers will be able to fly to the Slovakian city Kosice three months earlier than anticipated following an announcement from Hungarian-based airline Wizz Air.
It will open its base in Kosice, Slovakia on 5 June, three months earlier than originally planned.
This comes as Wizz Air revives its plans to float on the London Stock Exchange, though a similar plan was shelved last June, citing market volatility in the airline sector
The decision will see the first flight from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to Kosice take off on June 7. The twice weekly service will fly passengers to Kosice, the second largest city in Slovakia, located in the east of the country.
The airline continues to expand its operations from the region and the route to Kosice, which is one of Wizz’s 20 European bases, will become Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s ninth Wizz Air route.
Chris Harcombe, head of aviation development at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We’re delighted that customer demand has led Wizz to open its base in Kosice earlier than planned. This is great news for the city region that the North of England’s only service to Kosice will be flying from Doncaster earlier than planned.
“The route will connect Yorkshire to another major European city which offers a great location for travellers.
“We look forward to developing our partnership with Wizz Air further to provide an even wider range of locations for people to visit.”
Kosice was awarded the European Capital of Culture in 2013 and the city’s Eastern Slovak Museum is home to the gold treasure of Kosice, one of the largest and most significant treasures in Europe consisting of 2920 pieces of gold.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport is Wizz Air’s second largest UK base and the only one in Yorkshire. Currently, the airport operates a total of 24 Wizz Air flights per week to eight destinations including Bucharest in Romania, and Gdansk, Warsaw and Wroclaw in Poland.
Wizz Air’s Daniel de Carvalho said: “Wizz Air is pleased to announce an earlier opening date of its Kosice base. With our 2 new routes to Milan Bergamo and Doncaster Sheffield being served 3 months earlier than initially planned, and with an increased frequency of London Luton flights, our customers can now book this year’s summer holiday on WIZZ’s Kosice routes.”
