New £2.5 million Leeds city centre scheme given green light

Leeds city centre is set for a brand new £2.5 million affordable homes scheme after Leeds & Yorkshire Housing Association (LYHA) secured planning permission to develop 23 apartments in Hanover Square.

The scheme has been designed by Leeds-based Brewster Bye Architects and will replace a vacant building known as Kendal Carr that adjoins an extension of the Grade II listed Denison Hall, which was built in 1786.

Joanna Chambers, development manager from LYHA said: “We are delighted to have achieved planning permission for this scheme which will bring much needed seven one bedroom and 16 two bedroom affordable homes, with the added benefit of on-site parking, to this hugely sought after area close to the city centre.

“The new apartments will be at the forefront of modern living standards and will be energy efficient and affordable to live in.

“Some of the ground floor flats will also include small areas of private open space and every home will also have a secure cycle space.”

Architect Roger Stannard from Brewster Bye said: “Hanover Square is a unique residential area that combines a leafy park with the grand surroundings and history of Denison Hall, in a popular spot that is just minutes away from Leeds city centre.

“We took all this into account throughout the design of this development and we’re delighted that Leeds City Council’s planning department shared our sentiment..”

LYHA, along with other Yorkshire-based housing providers, is supporting the national campaign @HomesforBritain to solve the housing crisis in a generation.

LYHA has a commitment to build 245 new homes by 2018, which is an increase of around 20%.
