Men continue to drive the cosmetic surgery market

Men are leading a surge in the global cosmetic surgery market according to a recent UK report from Nuffield Health revealing that Men continue to drive the cosmetic surgery market. Loraine Reinsfeld, Managing Director, Gorgeous Getaways supports this claiming that men have always represented a large part of their business due to the privacy associated with travelling for cosmetic surgery. “In 2004, we hardly had any male clients, but now men represent at least 35% of our business which is up at least 10% from previous years. In February, 2012 we had more male clients than women and featured this on the cover of our February 2012 newsletter.“

But men having cosmetic surgery is not new. In 2009 in the United States alone, men had 9 percent of cosmetic procedures. The number of procedures (surgical and nonsurgical) performed on men was just over 1 million, an increase of 17 percent from the previous year. Surgical procedures increased 5 percent; nonsurgical procedures increased 21 percent. In 2009, The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) also reported that the number of men opting for nose surgery, liposuction and gynecomastia (`man-boob’) operations also rose significantly as men are losing their inhibitions and perception of cosmetic surgery (Cosmetic Surgery 2010 - Market Report , 2010). In this day and age when men must also compete with a younger work force it makes sense that this market will only continue to grow.

The top procedures for men reported by Gorgeous Getaways in 2014 were:

1. Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

2. Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)

3. Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

4. Octoplasty (Ear Correction)

5. Liposuction

Reinsfeld also states that “men often elect to have cosmetic surgery while travelling with their partners. They often have no initial plans to have something done, but change their mind once they see their partners go through such a great experience. Other male clients are often expats travelling with work and decide to have something done while they have a few weeks away. With a global workforce making it so much easier to be mobile, the market just continues to grow.“
