What is the Penguin Update?

Google are vicious. Every time you think that you have cracked the algorithm, they launch an update that causes you to go back to the drawing board.

Of course, there are ways in which to safe guard your websites and future proof them. In this article I will go through a few techniques that can help you.

The History of Penguin

The Penguin Update was launched by Google in April 2012. It was designed to catch sites that they deem to be spamming the search results. Penguin placed particular focus on those doing so by buying links or obtaining them through public link networks & SAPE.

Whenever a new update is released, sites that have been actively maintaining their link profiles and disavowing poor quality links may re-gain rankings, especially if they have been previously slapped. New sites could be caught by Penguin and punished severely. Some sites can be caught out as a “False Positive”, if your site is one of those that has been caught by mistake, then there is a chance you may escape.

How long does an update take to roll out?

Google can take a few days to roll out an update across their site. The key to finding out if an update has been released is by setting up a Google alert for anything relating to the keyword “Penguin” & “Panda” as these two updates are refreshed frequently.

How to do this:

Go to: https://www.google.co.uk/alerts

Then click on “Create an alert about…”

Type in “Penguin Update” click enter.

Type in “Panda Update” click enter.

This will tell Google to ping you an email with content referring to both of these terms when it happens, keeping you up-to-date in the SEO scene.

I will be launching a few top tips on our blog about how to avoid Google slap.
