£300k investment revitalises Ackworth pub

The Frog and Moose in Ackworth, near Wakefield, was a struggling business in desperate need of investment. A former working mans’ club, the venue was attracting a handful of locals and facing a daunting future.

With a dated and unkempt décor, the pub was in desperate need of an entire refurbishment, but with costs mounting the venue formally known as the Ackworth Moor Top Club closed its doors for good.

All was not lost however as Nostell Leisure, the company responsible for buying and refurbishing pubs and restaurants, recognised the potential in the business, and despite the risk of taking over a failed enterprise, purchased it in 2012 before embarking on a three-year plan to turn the troubled venue around.

£300k later and the bar is now an attractive and comfortable setting with new leather seating, alongside a modern and minimalistic décor. The venue has retained its appeal to the local audience with a pool table and television licensed to show the sport and a selection of real ales sourced from regional suppliers.

In addition, the renamed Frog and Moose now caters for a family audience with an outdoor play area with brightly coloured equipment and seating area with benches and tables.

Managing Director, Lauren Devine said: “There is nothing like a challenge to sink your teeth into and the Frog and Moose was certainly that. From day one we had a huge amount of work to do but we could always see the potential and a gap in the local market.

“We were more than aware that pubs were still struggling following the recession of 2008, as people continued to entertain at home, but despite this we were determined to bring a modern and vibrant venue to the Ackworth area.

She adds: “There is a local and captive audience who were crying out for a pub that they could visit which would be suitable for a drink after work or an evening out with the family. Getting that balance can be difficult but we really feel that we have this just right and look forward to welcoming more regulars and families over the coming months.”

Further plans for the Frog and Moose are in the pipeline with visions for a brand new kitchen, allowing the pub to offer food, as well as drinks, catering for the local market and passing trade.
