Plans for Hooters Newcastle denied by City Council

Plans to open a Hooters in Newcastle were today denied by the City Council although the US bar and restaurant chain has 21 days to appeal the decision.

Hooters were proposing to open a site at City Quadrant, near Lane Seven, but faced opposition over the dress code and image perpetuated by the chain.

Hooters argues its restaurants are family friendly and that the opposition generated is based on misconceptions.

Such opposition came from sections of Northumbria Police who believe a potential setup would attract more stag and hen parties to the city, therefore bringing a rise in crime.

Currently Hooters has limited expansion in the country, with only one site existing in Nottingham.

With controversy existing over potential crime and disorder, public nuisance and public safety, the Council made the decision to deny Hooters’ application.

It is currently unknown as to whether the chain will go ahead and make the appeal.
