Oscar-winning film producer officially opens new studio in Newcastle
Studio West, Tyneside’s new school for 13 to 19-year-olds, has been officially opened by Oscar-winning film producer Lord Puttnam.
Studio West delivers a new approach to teaching that focuses on project-based learning, which teaches students through real-life projects created by businesses.
Businesses also have a direct input into the school’s culture and curriculum, as well as providing regular work experience placements.
The philosophy at Studio West is to immerse its 120 students in the world of work to give them a real competitive edge in the employment market.
Lord Puttnam, the acclaimed producer whose credits include Chariots of Fire and The Killing Fields, officially opened Studio West as well as presenting awards to students as part of a celebratory day.
Lord Puttnam said: “I have been very impressed with what I have seen at Studio West, not only the quality of the premises, its equipment and classrooms, but the confidence, attitude and potential of its students.
“Studio West’s business-focus is a fantastic concept that will ensure students leave the school work-ready, equipped with workplace experience and the hard and soft skills that are increasingly sought after bypotential employers.”
Studio West Principal Val Wigham said: “Studio West is at the forefront of teaching allied with a strong focus on gaining in-depth practical knowledge of the world of business and commerce.
“All the staff and students were proud to showcase Studio West’s facilities and our project-led educational achievements to such an eminent guest as Lord Puttnam.”
