‘Otterly’ marvellous help from Greggs

Thirteen staff from the marketing team at Greggs the Bakers swapped their desks for the great outdoors this week and headed out to Seaton Burn to help Northumberland Wildlife Trust with the installation of an artificial holt.

The ‘Baker’s Dozen’ created the holt from recycled plastic panels, as shown on BBC One’s Springwatch and Countryfile programmes, and installed it along the bank of the Seaton Burn at Seghill (situated on the Northumberland border between Northumberland and Tyne and Wear) at the exact spot where otters have been spotted by very excited members of the public.

Sarah Marley, Project Officer for Living Waterways said: “We know otters are using the Seaton Burn, so we are keen to provide habitat for them to expand their range.

“The help from the team from Greggs is invaluable in helping us create suitable habitats and, without their good work, we would be struggling to find the time in the project to build the holts.”

The staff enjoyed their day so much they have expressed a desire to head out with Sarah again this summer.

The artificial recycled plastic holts were funded through the Local Environment Action Fund (LEAF) and forms part of the extensive habitat improvements in the North Tyneside and South East Northumberland locality.
