Hull firm Microsan's spray to fight Norovirus
Hull firm Microsan, who are in the final stages of development to create an antibacterial spray, are hoping their unique formula produced from essential oils will help eliminate future outbreaks of the Norovirus. The latest bout has led to the closure of wards at both Hull Royal and Castle Hill hospitals.
The highly contagious vomiting virus is present in the community all year round, but outbreaks tend to be more frequent during the winter months.
Norovirus is a highly infectious bug and although the symptoms are short-lived they can be very unpleasant. The main symptoms are projectile vomiting and/or diarrhoea, but they can also include nausea, stomach pain, headaches and aching muscles, and usually last for 24-48 hours.
Patients, visitors and staff with sickness and diarrhoea are currently being urged to stay away from the hospitals, particularly those who may come into contact with frail or vulnerable relatives ands friends.
Advice from the NHS says that most healthy people will be able to shake off the symptoms within 48 hours but extra care must be taken when cleaning areas where the bug might take hold.
Microsan has already helped care homes and hospitals across the country successfully control the spread of MRSA, C. difficile, and other airborne bacteria with their Natural Air Cleanser.
Microsan’s Vicki Jackson says their unique anti-bacterial formula really can help those most at risk from the virus:
“Our Natural Air Cleanser has been clinically tested and is proving to work brilliantly against these horrible bacterial infections. But once the development of a surface spray is complete, safe enough even for use on baby food trays, this product will go global.
“We have shown the new surface spray works at industry standard, reducing a range of test bacteria by 99.9%. Further tests are ongoing to find out which other bugs it can work against. As it contains natural ingredients will go even further towards peace of mind.”
