Hope for Blencathra bid to buy £1.7m mountain

A local community group that have previously failed to buy Blencathra mountain may have some hope yet.

Blencathra was listed for sale by the Earl of Lonsdale last year for £1.7m reportedly so that he could pay tax.

In an announcement published on their website it was said that the trustees agreed in principle to the offer and that they would like to proceed to the next stage.

Debbie Cosgrove, from Friends of Blencathra,said to the BBC: “It’s a definite step forward.

“Before we were concerned about continuing to fundraise if there wasn’t a clearly positive move in sight, but this means we can get back on track with that.”

“I’ve learned that this mountain is a very difficult one to climb, so am going to keep the champagne cork in the bottle until the ink is dry on the paper.

“But it’s a significant step for us.”
