Charity spinathon to raise funds for Kielder charity
Newcastle man Philip Pugh is challenging people to a race for a good cause this Friday (17 April) as part of an epic five-year fundraising plan.
Not content with ‘normal’ birthday celebrations, 60 year old Philip decided to start an annual birthday challenge - he swam the English Channel last year and to ‘celebrate’ his 61st birthday this year he’s cycling America’s Route 66, aiming to complete the 2,500 miles in just 25 days whilst raising money for Calvert Trust Kielder in Hexham.
To boost the fundraising, and squeeze in some extra training, Philip and his team will be on Newcastle’s South Northumberland Street (outside TK Maxx) on Friday 17 April between 930am and 530pm with stationary spinning bikes ready to take on any challengers or just those who want to test their ability, have fun and support a good cause.
Philip said: “We are aiming to raise as much money as possible for this excellent cause so we’d like to invite everyone to come along to support us and take part on the day.
“Calvert Trust Kielder does a truly wonderful job helping disabled people and their families experience outdoor adventure and activities. We want to ensure their good work continues by supporting this great local charity.”
This will be Philip’s second fundraising event for the Route 66 challenge, with around £2,300 already raised for Calvert Trust Kielder.
Calvert Trust Kielder’s Hazel Ditchburn said: “Philip is a real inspiration. It never ceases to amaze me the novel and challenging events people create to help raise money for us, and quite what they’re prepared to put themselves through as well! We’re so grateful, and I’m looking forward to seeing how he gets on.”
All proceeds will be used to help disabled people and their families to experience life changing outdoor adventure at Calvert Trust Kielder, located in the stunning Kielder Water & Forest Park, Northumberland.
