New investment at Middlesbrough care home could create 25 new jobs

Middlesbrough care home Parkville Care Centre, Part of Prestige Group’s portfolio of homes for the elderly, could soon be bringing new jobs to the region.

Following refurbishments over the past 12 months, Prestige are looking at investing in a further dementia unit that would increase Parkville’s occupancy and create another 25 jobs.

Providing both residential and dementia care, the purpose-built 94-bed Parkville presented a multi-million pound investment by Prestige Group when it opened on the grounds of an old playground on Walpole Street, close to Middlesbrough town centre.

A 10th anniversary celebration marked a coming of age for Parkville, as the centre bounces back following a difficult period that saw the home leased to Southern Cross before the national care provider went into administration.

Under the guidance of new manager Tony McGarry, a 90-strong team of full-time and part-time staff is aiming to return Parkville to 100% occupancy.

A number of Parkville’s residents lived most of their lives within a stone’s throw of the care home, including former Fleetham School pupil Edie Sudworth and newest arrival Joyce Roach, who lived within sight of the centre she now calls home.

Longest serving resident is Edna Grogan, who moved into Parkville soon after its opening in July 2005.

Prestige Group MD Mr Singh said: “When I first considered the site for a new care home, some people advised me to stay well away as it meant a substantial investment in an unfashionable part of the town.

“But I knew it could work as the site of a care home. It was the location, just off Union Street, on the edge of the town centre, that has always made it such a great site.

“We made a success of Parkville by making it a big part of the community in an underprivileged area of the town. More recently the centre has had to come through some difficult times.

“But we’ve worked closely with Middlesbrough Council and the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and, after much hard work and with a new team of professionals in place, Parkville celebrates its 10th anniversary back to the high standards of other Prestige care homes.

“The future looks very bright for the centre to remain at the heart of the local community.”
