All Terrain Cycles sponsors world record-breaking Tour de France ride
All Terrain Cycles, Yorkshire’s longest established cycle retailer, is sponsoring extreme cycling team Ultra6 as they attempt their latest world record challenge.
The cycling team, comprised of five Yorkshiremen, will try to cycle up one of the most difficult mountains in the Tour de France 19 times in just over three days; the equivalent of cycling 100,000ft or travelling into space!
Partaking in this challenge will be All Terrain Cycles mechanic and workshop manager Ben Wood who’s also a member of the store’s road race team, along with two other All Terrain road team members Nick Jovanovic and Matt Robinson, as well as Andy North and James Welsh.
The fivesome will travel to France in early July to attempt to climb Mont Ventoux 19 times, with an aim of setting a new world record for the most amount of feet climbed on a bicycle in a single ride on one mountain.
This news comes only weeks after the cycle retailerinvested £1m into the expansion of two stores in Wetherby and Salts Mill. The investment aims to grow the display stock of the cycle retailer’s stores to more than 1,000 bikes and offer new showroom displays.
The Ultra6 team has already achieved two world records and will be undertaking this latest challenge to raise funds for ABF, the Soldiers’ Charity.
Last year, the team raised £30,000 for the Lord Mayor’s Cycle Ride, cycling 240 miles in 22 hours from Leeds to the city’s twin town of Dortmund in Germany. In 2013, the team completed another challenge for ABF, running a marathon every day and cycling 100 miles on seven consecutive days from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Ben, who is the workshop manager at All Terrain Cycles’ Saltaire store, said: “This latest ‘Race to Space’ challenge is pretty daunting, even by our standards. Basically, we’re a group of ordinary, like-minded guys who are passionate about fitness and aim to do mad things in the hope that it will inspire other people to take up sport and exercise as well as raising funds for charities we care about.
“We’re not professionals, so fitting in a rigorous training programme as well as working is pretty tough. Some of us have just completed a ten day intensive training camp in Murcia, Spain as part of our build-up to July and having recently taken possession of our state-of-the-art Orbea Orca bikes from All Terrain Cycles, we’re all getting pretty excited. We’d like to say a huge thank you to All Terrain and to all our sponsors, we hope to do you proud when we take on the beast of Provence!”
Tony Booth, managing director of All Terrain Cycles which has superstores in Wetherby and in Saltaire, near Bradford, added: “Ben and the guys are living proof of their ethos that people can do amazing things when they put their minds to it. Every year, they attempt and successfully complete an incredible challenge as well as raising huge amounts for charity. We’re delighted to be supporting their latest world record challenge.”
