Cyclists set to roll through Leeds as Sky Ride returns

Tour de Yorkshire isn’t the only cycling phenomenon that is set to roll into the region as Leeds is preparing to host its third Sky Ride to the city centre.

Sky Ride, a mass-participation of cyclers, is set to bring thousands of like-minded people to a traffic-free city.

More than 8,500 spectators and cyclists have visited Leeds’ Sky Ride in previous years, and therefore provide an economic boost for local bars, restaurants, retailers and other city-based businesses.

The 6.5km route of this year’s Sky Ride starts on The Headrow, and cyclists are set to pass iconic city landmarks from Leeds University to the town hall and First Direct Arena.

Riders can challenge family and friends in the Sprint Zone, experience the sensory tunnel and find out more about cycling opportunities in Leeds.

Cycling experts at Halfords are offering a free bike safety check to everyone who registers and will be on hand to help out with any last minute problems.

This annual event is one of 15 to be held nationally and is part of a continuing partnership between Leeds City Council, British Cycling, Sky and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority which aims to encourage more people to get cycling.

Since the partnership was first formed, the number of people cycling in Leeds once a week has increased by more than 57%.

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for digital and creative technologies, culture and skills, said: “Sky Ride has been a massive success in Leeds so we’re delighted to be welcoming it back for its third year. Building on the success of the Grand Départ and the soon to take place Tour de Yorkshire finale at Roundhay Park we’re confident this year will be better than ever.

“Leeds is a keen cycling city, we continue to invest in cycle-ways across the city and have more people than ever before inspired to get out on their bikes. I myself only started riding a few years ago and Sky Ride has been a brilliant experience for me so it would be great to see even more people come out and join me this year.

“Sky Ride is fantastic fun and probably your only chance to enjoy riding the city centre free from traffic. The festival atmosphere last year was great so even if you’re not getting on your bike there are loads of fun activities to get involved with.”

“Sky Rides close big towns and cities for big bike events so you can ride safely on traffic-free streets, with a huge festival atmosphere and loads to do both on and off the bike. They are good fun and a great way to get on your bike.”
