Power station wins national safety award

One of Northumberland’s largest industrial employers has been awarded one of the UK’s highest honours for health and safety management.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has bestowed its Order of Distinction on Lynemouth Power Ltd and its 135 employees.

The Order of Distinction is RoSPA’s highest sustained achievement award and is only presented to those organisations that have attained at least 15 consecutive RoSPA Gold Awards for outstanding health and safety performance. Lynemouth Power is entering its 20th year at this level.

Vaun Campbell, works director at Lynemouth Power Ltd, said: “This award recognises the systems we have in place to enhance the health of our employees and to protect the safety of everyone who enters our site. However for Lynemouth Power health and safety is about much more than a management system. It is part of our culture and it’s engrained in every aspect of our work. So although this RoSPA award is something we celebrate as a team, it is a badge of honour everyone at Lynemouth Power can wear with great pride.”

For almost 60 years, the RoSPA Awards scheme has recognised commitment to accident and ill-health prevention and is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The scheme not only looks at accident records, but also entrants’ health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Dave Rawlins, awards manager, RosPA said: “Lynemouth Power is a very worthy recipient of our Order of Distinction. Power stations are complex environments and if they are not managed to the very highest standards they can be hazardous places in which to work or visit. RoSPA believes it is important to recognise outstanding commitment to health and safety and Lynemouth Power has consistently achieved at this level for many years. We’re delighted to congratulate the entire team and we hope they will continue to lead by example for many years to come.”

The majority of RoSPA’s awards are non-competitive, marking achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Organisations maintaining high standards can win gold medals, president’s awards and ultimately, orders of distinction.
