A growing independent chain of hair salons has teamed up in a unique training partnership with one of the world’s biggest global brands.

SHINE Hair & Beauty, which has opened three salons in the last 12 months, is putting all its 40 staff through a year-long exclusive training programme of tailor made creative days, product knowledge training and studio visits.

The salon teams, who are based in Northallerton, Stokesley and Preston Farm, Stockton, have undertaken their first monthly training day at the Wella Academy in Manchester.

All staff, from the newest juniors to the longest serving principal stylists and owners Wilson Derbyshire, Stephen MacVean and Jacqui Elliott are taking part.

Wilson said the partnership was part of a long-term investment plan to build skills and prepare ambitious members of the team for future opportunities.

The company has taken on nine apprentices and is seeking senior stylists and managers to meet growth its ambitions.

Wilson explained: “Our staff are our future and while we are generating a lot of interest in the industry locally for people seeking career opportunities, we also want to make sure we grow people from within.

“The whole team is taking part in the month by month, year-long Wella programme to ensure clients receive a consistently high quality, yet bespoke, service whichever of our salons they visit.

“Clients can be confident that we are right up to date and are bringing back lots of fresh ideas and looks back to the salons for them to enjoy. For our growing team, it’s the opportunity to become true experts and have valuable, on-going professional development opportunities.”

Karen Wilkinson, North East key account technical trainer with Wella UK and Ireland, said: “SHINE and Wella Professionals have joined forces to create a unique partnership which we’ve developed together to ensure all SHINE staff are educated to the highest level to offer expert advise and knowledge on all colouring and care services to clients.”

On the first away-day at the Wella Academy, staff worked on the latest in cutting and styling trends with Sebastian Professional products.

SHINE Hair & Beauty is currently looking to expand the brand through new salons and owner-managed businesses.
