Abbey College Manchester Students Get Creative

Budding artists at Abbey College Manchester went head to head in a bid to win prominent positioning of their art work in the college’s brand new, contemporary reception area.

15 students from the city-centre-based independent college put on their creative hats to compete in the Art Challenge which was entitled “Here and Now”.

The students were encouraged to use their art, photography, sculpture, or other media skills to explore the concept of this versatile topic.

The subject was deliberately left as an open title to allow for a range of interpretations and to let the students’ imagination run free.

A judging panel decided the winning piece and the proud GCSE pupil who took home gold was William Haq, (18), from Whitefield. His photograph of a person’s reflection in a puddle on a rainy day caught the judges’ eyes and secured him the title.

The successful candidate will have his work showcased in the recently built, stunning reception area in the college for all the visitors and students to admire. William also received a £50 Arndale gift certificate.

Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Photography, Geography, English Language and Maths student, William said: “I am so pleased to have won and very surprised. There was some tough competition and I am incredibly excited to have my work showcased in the new reception.”

The runners up were GCSE student Jenny Ting, (17), from Whitworth Street, Manchester and A-level student Yazn Achtar, (17), of Manchester Road, Wilmslow who both received a £25 Arndale gift certificate for their photographs.

Head of Creative Arts, Claire Rigby ran the competition. She commented: “The students are very adept. They learnt different techniques and took the imagery where ever they could go with it. There are a lot of talented students here and some of their work even makes it into my home.”

Liz Elam, Principal of Abbey College Manchester, commented: “We have had a great response to the Art Challenge and the judges had a real task on their hands deciding a winner.

“The work was excellent and it was great to see so many students dedicated to helping improve the visual appearance of the college.”

Abbey College Manchester is a leading independent college in the heart of Manchester, with a fast-growing and vibrant community.

There are around 229 students at the college, located just off King Street, 75% of whom are from the local area with the remainder from other countries. Most students are undertaking A Level programmes with the remainder studying BTEC courses or GCSEs.
