£20m Sellafield contract win for Tata Steel
Sellafield Ltd has announced that Tata Steel is to be awarded a contract worth £20 million.
The four-year package of work will see Tata Steel modify and refurbish an existing fleet of specialist containers used to safely transfer waste from old storage plants to modern stores.
This work will enable the decommissioning of the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo (MSSS),one of the four oldest nuclear waste stores on the site.
Sellafield Ltd managing director Paul Foster, “This announcement demonstrates our commitment to ensuring value for money for the UK taxpayer without compromising quality
“I am delighted to have a local company demonstrate the capability, capacity and commitment to meet the programme requirements.
“It means we can also expect a range of benefits to West Cumbria and the local supply chain, which ultimately is what we, and local stakeholders, want to see in the region.”
Sellafield Ltd’s focus is to safely clean up and decommission the high hazard facilities on the site.
The cost of decommissioning the site has increased dramatically and this awarded contract follows the award of a £50m contract to Metalcraft.
