Work to start next year on £1.3bn offshore wind farm set in Sussex

The construction of a £1.3bn wind farm off the coast of Sussex will begin early next year, according to ITV News.

Creating a new energy for around 300,000 homes, the 400-megawatt Rampion wind farm will be built eight miles off the coat and will consist of 116 turbines.

The project, which is the first of its kind off the south coast of England, is expected to create around 450 jobs during the construction process, and could cut CO2 emissions by up to 600,000 tonnes a year for the region.

Last year, it was announced that the Rampion wind farm would be smaller than expected with 116 rather than 175 turbines.

Amber Rudd, Energy and Climate Change Secretary said: “This huge investment is a vote of confidence in the UK, creating local jobs, bringing business opportunities and providing clean, home-grown energy.”

Shaun Kingsbury, chief executive of E.ON’s project partner said: “Our investment gives the developer the confidence to begin construction on this important wind project, boosting UK energy supply and generating enough power annually for around 300,000 homes.”
