Matalan to open first London store in Oxford Street

Low-cost retailer Matalan is set to open its first central London store in Oxford Street next month.

The three-storey outlet will be midway between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road, and close to a Crossrail station when it opens in 2018, according to the Standard.

Matalan was founded in Preston 30 years ago by John Hargreaves, and it now run by his son Jason.

The store, which is due to open on June 4, has created 144 jobs.

Jason commented: “One of the reasons we’ve done it is for the profile. Traditionally we’ve been a big-box out-of-town retailer and obviously online as well.

“This will open up a big opportunity for us, we want to get the value message across. Oxford Street’s been on our radar for some time but it’s been three years waiting for the right site to come along.”

The Oxford Street store will be one of Matalan’s smallest at 16,000 sq ft compared with an average 25,000 sq ft for the retailer’s traditional out-of-town units.
