Go wild with new Android app

Finding new places to experience encounters with wildlife is about to get easier with a new free app offering a guide to more than 2,000 nature reserves and thousands of events and activities up and down the UK

Explore secret city spots and wild quarries, sit by quiet streams and rivers, admire ancient trees and wander through wildflower meadows with ‘Nature Finder’, The Wildlife Trusts’ free Android app, available from Saturday 23 May 2015.

‘Nature Finder’ is a simple location-based app which enables the user to find Wildlife Trust nature reserves and events wherever they are. There is also a directory of Wildlife Trusts around the UK, with links to online information.

Duncan Hutt, Head of Land Management at Northumberland Wildlife Trust said: “Northumberland Wildlife Trust cares for over 60 special wild places in Newcastle, Northumberland and North Tyneside. As most people in the region and indeed the UK, live within a few miles of our nature reserves, we’re delighted ‘Nature Finder’ is now available to both Android and iPhone users so everyone can carry a comprehensive guide to local wild places in their phone.”

The Android version of ’Nature Finder ‘has been created for The Wildlife Trusts by volunteer, Rhisiart ap Gwilym, who developed it based on the original iPhone version, launched in 2013. It uses GPS technology to automatically find the user’s location and display maps and listings of nature reserves and events. Each nature reserve has an image, brief description, and information on facilities, such as parking, toilets etc.

Fantastic features of ‘Nature Finder’, which is free, include: • Searching for more than 2,000 nature reserves plus thousands of events and activities • A directory for all 47 Wildlife Trusts with contact details and ability to donate by text • Save your favourite places - where you’ve been and where you’d like to go • Information on more than 800 UK wildlife species will be available in an update by 1 July 2015
