Foundations laid for Brighton’s i360

The foundations have been laid for for England’s tallest observation tower outside of London.

Designed by the team behind the London Eye, Brighton’s i360 will be 162 metres tall, with an observation pod at 138 metres.

Two hundred lorry loads of concrete are arriving at Brighton seafront at regular intervals for the work on Saturday.

Eleanor Harris, chief executive of Brighton i360, said: “This is the exciting moment we have all been waiting for – once the foundation is in place, we can start building the world’s first vertical cable car. The tower will start going up on 15th June.”

The tower, which will be situated on the axis of the city’s Grade II listed Regency Square, is expected to attract at least 700,000 visitors per year.

Construction will be completed this summer, with the tower officially opening in mid-2016
