Bowling tournament fundraises for Charity Challenges for Kids

BUSINESSES across the city took to the bowling alleys for a charity Ten Pin tournament to raise funds for two young Cerebral Palsy sufferers from Manchester.

More than £2,500 was raised by the charity bowlers at Dog Bowl on Whitworth Street last week to support Charity Challenges for Kids, a charity set up to help children raise funds for medical treatment when treatment is not available in this country or funds are not available on the NHS.

The money raised will be split between appeals for eleven-year-old Nicholas Bamforth and six-year-old Marley Fenton, both whom cannot walk unaided for long distances and struggle to do everyday tasks such as carrying school bags and playing with friends.

Nicholas, from Middleton, currently endures hours of daily physiotherapy and medication and is trying to raise £10,000 to fund further care at St Louis Children’s Hospital in America, where he underwent surgery two years ago.

Marley, from Clayton, needs to raise £16,000 for a life-changing SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) operation at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, which will help him to walk and improve his general mobility.

Organised by award-winning Communications Agency Roland Dransfield PR, the competition saw 12 company teams compete for the Winner’s Trophy, with NJL striking it lucky and taking the top spot in a bowl-off against Foresight.

Teams from Hill Dickinson, Jelf, Pareto Financial Planning, Neighbourhood, Platinum Financial Recruitment, Nessa Asset Management and 90Degrees also took part paying £95 to enter the competition and with raffle ticket sales and auction bids a staggering £2,501 was raised.

Roland Dransfield MD Lisa Morton said: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to support Charity Challenges for Kids in this way and are bowled over by the amount we have been able to raise.

“The money will definitely go some way in helping both Nicholas and Marley fund future operations and vital aftercare. We are honoured to have been able to help both boys in this small way.

“We also need to say a huge thank you to all the businesses who took part and offered their support, particularly Dog Bowl who provided the venue for free and donated prizes for the raffle. It was an amazing evening and we were delighted to have raised so much.”

Marley’s mum Nicola Chantler said: “We want to say a huge thank you to all those people who took part and donated to this cause – it is hugely appreciated.

“Sadly Marley does not qualify for the SDR operation on the NHS and so we are desperately trying to raise funds to pay for it ourselves. The operation alone costs £16,000 and he will also need around £15,000 of post-operative care.

“We have a long way to go to reach our target but are determined to do so as the benefits to Marley will be huge – both now and for his long term future.”
