Cash boost for the Jake McCarthy Foundation

A Rothley brain tumour charity is to benefit from a cash boost gifted by one regional builder.

The Jake McCarthy Foundation has received £1,000 from Persimmon Homes North Midlands to raise awareness of the symptoms of brain tumours and to ensure early diagnosis.

The charity was set-up by John and Barbara McCarthy following the sudden and tragic death of their son, Jake, who died from an undiagnosed brain tumour.

The donation comes as part of the housebuilder’s Community Champions scheme, which will see a pot of £24,000 given out to local good causes over the next 12 months throughout the region.

Groups will be chosen every month to receive a match-funding donation with local community groups being encouraged to apply by completing an online form at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity.

John Reynolds, from the Jake McCarthy Foundation, said: “We are thrilled with this generous donation from Persimmon Homes North Midlands. The Foundation set-up in Jake’s memory aims to help improve early diagnosis of brain tumours by raising awareness of the symptoms and early warning signs.

“This donation will be put towards funds for further research. At the moment, research into brain tumours is relatively low at less than 1% of the cumulative national cancer research spending in the UK. We are very thankful for this contribution and know it will be put to great use.”

Paul Hurst, managing director for Persimmon Homes North Midlands said the community initiative is an excellent way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company works.

He said: “We are confident this funding will make a huge difference to The Jake McCarthy Foundation. The quality of the submissions we received were very high, so choosing the good causes to support was much harder than we expected.

“We now want to hear from more groups and charities as we look to allocate more funding over the next month. All we ask is that the group or charity has already worked hard to raise money themselves, and we will then match this effort with funding of up to £1,000.”
