Liverpool Marina Sees Unprecedented Demand
Liverpool Marina has seen a surge in enquiries following on from the 3 Queens Spectacular. The venue, which berths more than 300 boats was inundated during the event with boats visiting and many more enquiring about mooring their vessels permanently in the city.
David Beard, the operator of Liverpool Marina explains: ‘We’ve had almost 100 new enquiries from boat owners since the 3 Queens event last week, that’s nearly five times the number of enquiries at this time of year. Boat owners have visited the city, soaked up its maritime heritage and have decided they would like to spend more time here’.
More than 40 boats locked out of the marina at 4am on Bank Holiday Monday and, due to the tide, spent nearly 12 hours waiting for the Cunard ships to arrive. During the event there was a strict exclusion zone in the water around the ships, but that didn’t prevent yachts, motor boats, jet skis and even a canoe from getting out on the River Mersey.
Greg Chiswell aged 32, has been sailing from Liverpool Marina for more than 20 years. He explains: ‘The yachting and boating industry in the city is thriving. We have an active racing and cruising programme throughout the year and seem to have overcome the economic challenges of recent years.’
Through his role as Deputy Head of The Observatory School on The Wirral Mr Chiswell has recently established a RYA approved Sailability centre at the Marina, providing opportunities to promote the social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people with disabilities. Equipping the next generation with maritime skills is designed to support the emerging economy.
With the Northern Boat Show set to see another influx of people interested in boating, the marina has partnered with Liverpool Yacht Club to stage a ‘Get Into Sailing!’ event on Friday 5th June at 3pm.
Participants will be able to learn more about crewing on boats, boat ownership, RYA [Royal Yachting Association] courses and how affordable it is to join Liverpool Yacht Club. Afterwards they will be able to get aboard and look around a number of racing yachts.
Anybody is welcome to attend the event that includes a drinks reception afterwards, at Liverpool Marina, L3 4BP, at 3pm by just turning up.
