Shiremoor House Farm celebrates community heroes

One of North Shields’ most loved pubs congratulated volunteers from St. Oswald’s Hospice for their dedication to the North East at the start of National Volunteers Week.

Volunteer workers from the Hospice received a complementary three course lunch at the Shiremoor House Farm on in recognition of their services to the Hospice.

Situated on Middle Engine Lane, North Shields, the CAMRA listed pub is well known by the community for its friendly feel and great British pub food classics which the volunteers experienced a taste of.

St. Oswald’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care for children, young people and adults from the North East, with their volunteers providing excellent care to patients with life limiting conditions. The charity provides support for both families and carers throughout the area and relies on fund-raising efforts from the team of volunteers.

Sean Schofield, manager at the Shiremoor House Farm, said: “The Shiremoor pub is at the heart of the community and we wanted to give back to the community by celebrating all the hard work the volunteers do. They do a fantastic job every single day and are a vital part of the community and a crucial part of fund-raising efforts for St. Oswald’s Hospice. We wanted to reward and reflect their success by treating them to a complimentary three course lunch and well deserved treat.”

More than 1,400 people, of all ages and backgrounds, volunteer their time and skills to St Oswald’s. Volunteers work in over 120 roles, from collection van drivers, till operators and window dressers, to behind the scenes work and positions directly involving patients.

The team of volunteers work at the St Oswald’s shops which sell a range of good quality, second hand items such as clothing, books, DVDs, CDs and electrical goods. All profits from the sale of items in their shops help them to care for North East families at a time when they need it most.

During National Volunteer Week, the Hospice is also saying thanks by holding Long Service Awards for volunteers who have dedicated their time for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 years, as well as a Strawberry Cream Tea event for all its current volunteers.

Andrew Moir, Head of retail at St Oswald’s said: “We are so grateful to the team at Shiremoor House Farm for inviting our North Shields shop volunteers for a lunch to thank them for their hard work in selling tickets for our annual raffle. All of our volunteers work so hard give up their spare time to help run our shops, but the team at North Shields really went that extra mile with their fantastic raffle ticket sales.

“We are delighted that we are able to show them our appreciation and thanks. Our shops simply couldn’t run without the amazing work our volunteers do. Their commitment and dedication makes a real difference to local adults, young people, children and their families.”

Opened in 1988, the Shiremoor House Farm pub and restaurant serves food 7 days a week including breakfast snacks, express lunch menu and daily changing fantastic British pub classics, all washed down with a wide range of real ales.
