Oslo signs historic trade agreement with Hackney

Leaders from the Norwegian capital Oslo have signed an historical trade agreement with Hackney, strengthening business and investment opportunities for local businesses.

Hackney Town Hall was the setting for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Oslo and the London Borough of Hackney, cementing an already established relationship forged during Hackney House Austin and the ‘Oslo meets Hackney’ event last year to launch the borough’s Oslo Innovation Embassy.

Oslo’s Vice Mayor, Hallstein Bjercke, with a delegation of 30 Norwegian representatives were welcomed by Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, and the Hackney Speaker, Cllr Sade Etti, to sign the agreement between the two cities.

A formal agreement between Hackney and Oslo, the MOU symbolises a long-standing collaborative relationship in trade and investment, promoting tech and creative industries, raising the awareness of business investment and support opportunities, exchanging knowledge and best practice and helping to boost the growth and success of small businesses.

Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Hackney Council said: “It was great to join with the Oslo delegation in the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, bolstering the long-term commitment of collaborative working to benefit both communities.

“Hackney and Oslo have already shared a considerable volume of knowledge, expertise and business links since first joining together in 2012.

“With the signing of this historic document, both cities will continue to move forwards together, engaging with other partners to not only expand trade and commerce, but to provide the young people in both destinations with opportunities to develop their own business and creative acumen to become successful in their chosen careers.”
