Building contractor T Manners has been appointed to undertake building works at Kings Priory School in Tynemouth, in a contract has a spend of approximately £4m, following competitive tender.

The Bishop Auckland-based company are working on multiple sites, covering both the primary school building in Percy Park Road and its middle and senior schools in Huntington Place.

Architects Howarth Litchfield Partnership of Durham, which designed the new facilities, managed the necessary planning application and are now retained to ensure that the construction phase runs smoothly.

Work began on the Sixth Form building and Middle School on 1 June and will be completed before the end of the year, which will ensure that students have the best learning environment.

Facilities are to include a new coffee shop, Learning Resource Centre, careers suite, sixth form lounge and work areas, as well as seminar rooms to facilitate collaborative learning plus new lighting and wi-fi access.Disability access is also to be created with internal lifts and a new external staircase to complement the existing staircases.

Alan Crawford, Commercial Director of T Manners, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded a second contract which provides us with a further opportunity to build on our earlier success and involvement in the development of Phase 1. It also provides the school with continuity which will ensure smooth delivery of the scheme.”

Neil Turner, Director of Howarth Litchfield Partnership and project architect for Kings Priory School, said: “The success of this project is down to the hard work and collaborative approach of our design team, assisted by the local authority’s planning department and the listed building officer on the scheme.

“Once complete, the scheme will be a fine example of the innovative use of a listed building, whilst respecting its heritage, to create a new modern Sixth Form Centre and Middle School, and I’m proud to be part of that journey.”

Principal Gill Hewlett added: “These building works form part of cross-site improvements to ensure we provide the best environment and facilities for students.

“We have already created vast improvements to our First School site, including a brand new, state-of-the-art building and facilities for pupils entering Reception. This creates a wonderful opportunity for pupils starting school life.”
