Builder helps grow next generation of green-fingered pupils

School children from across Weston-super-Mare are flexing their green fingers and taking part in a competition designed to encourage children to grow their own plants and vegetables.

Aiming to be crowned king or queen of the garden patch, the children from five schools including Castle Batch Community Primary School, have been hard at work recording their progress in a diary log of the fruit, vegetables and plants they have lovingly cultivated and grown.

Nicola Reed, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, said: “We are delighted that so many schools are taking part and we look forward to seeing the end results. The pupils are so enthusiastic and I’m confident that they will come up with some really imaginative and creative ideas to grow their own fruit and vegetables.”

The competition, which closes in July, asks schools from across the region to submit diary and pictorial evidence of the children growing plants and vegetables to demonstrate what has successfully been grown throughout the competition period. A cash prize of £500 will be awarded to the school who is deemed to have the most green-fingered pupils.

Linda Payne, school business manager for Castle Batch Primary School, said: “The children are really enjoying getting stuck into their gardening and learning about the importance of growing vegetables. We hope that we can go on to scoop the top prize.”
