Martin-Brooks makes splash at hotel pool
Guests taking a swim at a hotel in Worcestershire are no longer getting wetter than is strictly necessary, thanks to Sheffield roofing specialists, Martin-Brooks.
The firm was called to the Mercure Kidderminster Hotel in Bewdley to address numerous leaks in the roof of its leisure complex that were seriously affecting operations.
A site investigation discovered the problems were caused by inadequate specification and workmanship, dating back to the leisure complex’s construction approximately 20 years ago. With help from Quay Commercial, who managed the interior fit out, Martin-Brooks stripped, insulated and recovered the entire 700 square metre slate roof and replaced a flat roof at the rear of the annex, which houses a half Olympic size swimming pool.
Martin-Brooks was given just seven weeks to complete the project to minimise disruption to the hotel’s guests. Its experts had only four weeks to strip the roof and erect a temporary covering, as this was the maximum time the swimming pool could remain closed. This tight window of opportunity was made more challenging by the discovery of asbestos in the old slates, which meant their removal had to be controlled carefully.
The swimming pool roof was recovered using reconstituted slate and an upgraded 140mm insulation board to improve the building’s thermal performance. A Kemperol liquid coating system was added to the flat roof at the rear of the complex.
Martin-Brooks director, Nick Brooks, said: “It is always disappointing to see a relatively new construction aging so poorly, particularly when it affects a business that relies heavily on providing a positive customer experience. This was a large area of roof to complete in such a short period, but our team enjoys a challenge and thanks to close liaison with hotel management and our client, the project was finished on time and with minimum disturbance to guests.”
