Ilford’s new housing zone to provide 2000 new homes

The mayor of London has unveiled plans for a new housing zone in Ilford, which will provide over 2000 new homes including 500 affordable homes by March 2021.

The Ilford Hill and High Road areas have been chosen for the new scheme, and the total investment is expected to cost more than £500m.

The zone aims to regenerate the borough’s drive to increase housing supply and capitalise on the arrival of Crossrail, while increasing public interest in the area around Ilford station.

Redbridge Council will collaborate with private sector partners in the area, to bring forward new housing in the zone.

The development could potentially create up to 4000 jobs and 150 apprenticeships.

Planning consent is already in place for the development at Britannia Music Site, which will provide 354 new homes, and the Paragon Heights site where a further 144 homes will be built.

Councillor Helen Coomb, Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration and Planning, said: “Receiving this funding is great news for Redbridge and will allow us to deliver much needed housing in the area.

“This level of investment from the GLA will bring improved transport along with the arrival of Crossrail and new jobs will boost the local economy and provide great new facilities for our community. It is a testament to the strength of our bid and recognition of our development plans for the Borough.

“The Council is ambitious for Ilford and working with the GLA, we will develop a holistic approach to regeneration, instilling new confidence and making it a location of choice for developers and investors.”

Mayor of London Boris Johnson added: “Housing Zones will provide the swift delivery of new homes for Londoners that is so desperately needed and create entirely new, highly-connected urban districts for generations to come. By freeing up empty brownfield sites from lengthy approval processes and providing a funding boost, we can ensure new housing capacity is created in areas where it might never otherwise have happened.

“I am very pleased that the announcement of four more Housing Zones today brings us within touching distance of our aim to create 50,000 new homes through this innovative scheme.”
