This week’s regional highlights: Hull’s digital boom, Heathrow’s expansion and Dynamo’s tech success
We couldn’t deliver a round-up of regional business highlights across the country for this week without mentioning the proposed Heathrow expansion. On Wednesday, the Airports Commission, led by Sir Howard Davies, gave the long-awaited decision to formally recommend the construction of a third runway at Heathrow Airport. The West London airport was competing with rival Gatwick, which revealed plans for a second runway earlier this year. The controversial recommendation goes against the opinions of several politicians, including Prime Minister, David Cameron and Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
Meanwhile up North, East Yorkshire saw its digital economy valued at £7bn in a report by KC Communications. In fact, the digital economy in the region employs 57,600 people (22% of total employment locally).
In the North West, Stagecoach announced plans to invest £9.7m in its Merseyside and South Lancashire fleet. The investment, which will provide 55 new vehicles for routes across the region, comes as part of the operator’s commitment to provide a high quality service for its customers.
Last but not least, this week was a great one for North East tech talent. Founded through a collaboration between a wide range of big IT players, Dynamo brings together IT organisations, employers, technology hubs, education, local government and employer support schemes, which promote the North East’s skills nationally and internationally and highlight the career opportunities in the local sector.
