Boris bike use doubles as Tube strike causes chaos

More than 30,000 bikes were hired during the Tube strike, which began at 18:30 on Wednesday and ended at 21:30 last night.

According to Transport for London (TfL) the usage of so-called ‘Boris bikes’ has increased as Londoners found it difficult to get to and from work yesterday.

On a normal day, TfL records 16,000 daily bike hires.

A spokeswoman said: “The picture is of the Soho Square hub, where we have allocated space to allow users to bring their bikes to us when they’re finished with them if they are unable to find an available docking station.”

Extra cycle hubs have been put on in a range of locations as well as Soho Square due to the strike shutting down the entire Tube network.

Hubs were also in place at Houghton Street near the Strand, Finsbury Square, Butler Place, Waterloo, Stonecutter Street and Belgrove Street, TfL said.

Yesterday, the FSB said the Tube strike may have cost London businesses up to £300m in lost revenue.

Four unions took place in the strikes, resulting in the biggest Tube-wide walk out in 13 years.
