Thomson Ecology wins award for "game changing" technology

Leading UK ecology consultancy Thomson Ecology has won the company innovation of the year award at the 2015 Construction News Awards for their GPS technology system known as TIM (Thomson Interactive Mapping).

The winners of the 2015 Construction News Awards were announced to the industry on 30 June at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London. The Construction News Awards brought together over 1,200 industry leaders from across the UK for a glittering evening of celebration, recognition and networking.

TIM was described as “truly game-changing” by the judges and was declared the winning innovation, beating off the seven other competitors in the category including London Underground, J. Murphy & Sons and Costain.

Tim Donoyou, Head of Geospatial at Thomson Ecology, who collected the award, said,

“Winning this award is an amazing achievement, especially as we were in competition with some large companies with some fascinating innovations. TIM had already proved itself in the field through projects like East West Rail, but winning the Construction News’ Innovation of the Year award will, we hope, bring it to the attention of potential clients who haven’t yet had the opportunity to try it.”

Ecology consultancy Thomson Ecology provides a range of services, from surveys and impact assessments to mitigation management and ecological contracting. This new technology – TIM - puts data collection at the heart of the business and the user friendly platform is changing the way projects are managed.

Surveyors each have a mobile mapper to collect and upload data instantly, so ecologists can see all of the data as it is collected. They can then discuss potential problems with their clients to find a resolution quickly. Clients and project teams can also access the data secure websites and the user-friendly format makes the jobs of clients and contractors easier. All of the data is physically mapped and presented interactively, with photographs, documents, reports, health and safety risk assessments and contact details for landowners, all for clients to view and access when they need it.

Denise Chevin, consultant editor of Construction News said:

“The calibre of entries seems to rise each year demonstrating the fantastic work going on in the sector – technical ingenuity, great business acumen and world class projects. Winning a Construction News Award is something for companies and individuals to be immensely proud of and is an excellent way of showing clients that you really are at the top of your game.”

Thomson Ecology spends around six per cent of its turnover on innovation, and it is determined to continue leading in its field by keeping data and technology at the heart of its business. The plan is now to develop an app so its technology can be used on mobile phones, as well as on tablets and laptops.
