Williams BMW Sponsors Golf Protégé in International Competition
Williams BMW is supporting 10-year-old Josie Plowman from Bramhall in helping help achieve her dream of winning the IMG Junior World Championships in America this week.
The generous £1,500 donation from the prestige motor group which has BMW retail centres in Stockport, Manchester, Bolton, Liverpool, and Rochdale, made a substantial impact towards Josie’s travel expenses, enabling her to afford the big trip across the Atlantic. In a further show of support the company also donated a package of Williams BMW branded golf accessories to complete her professional look in the tournament.
Josie has been serious about golf from the age of eight and was introduced to it by her father.
Admirably, Gavin Plowman, of Rushton Drive, sacrificed his own love of the game for eight years by giving up the expensive sport to support his family. After climbing the ladder in his career, Gavin was able to integrate back into the golfing hemisphere two years ago.
The St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School pupil persuaded her father to take her to the driving range where she fell in love with the game. Josie then attended two Saturday clubs but wanted to move onto the golf course. They joined Bramhall Park Golf Club where Josie could swing to her heart’s content.
An excited Josie entered into the Junior Golf Championships in Redbourn in 2014 but came second. Disheartened but determined Josie told her father that she would win next year.
And she did, winning an impressive seven points ahead of the runner up. Her incredibly proud father, Gavin has accompanied her to San Diego to compete in the IMG Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines. There she will play 54 holes, 18 per day, starting today (14th) and continuing over the 15th and 16th July.
The family hope Josie will make it into the top 25. Gavin said: “There will be about 80 nine-ten year olds who have been playing golf since they could walk, so the top 25 is realistic.”
Winning the competition in Redbourn also meant Josie qualified for the Junior World Masters in Las Vegas from the 21st to the 23rd July and Williams BMW has offered its steadfast support throughout her overseas stay.
Josie and Gavin will enjoy 19 days in America and they hope to make the most of this incredible opportunity by combining training time with sightseeing. Gavin said: “Josie has always wanted to go to America. We will practice in the morning when it is cooler and then see as much as we can in the afternoon. I can’t wait to see her face once we get there. We are so excited to see how she does and she will have so much fun competing which I keep telling her is the most important part.”
Josie said: “I am really excited, I was so happy when I won the qualifier I was singing and dancing when I got home. I think I will play really well in America, I have been practicing a lot.”
Williams Group Managing Director Nick Cook commented: “It is such an honour for Williams BMW to be able to support such a brilliant young talent like Josie. She is a lovely girl and we are confident she will do well.”
