Harrogate Council set for new £9m headquarters move

Harrogate Council has agreed to sell its recognizable offices and build a brand new £9m headquarters.

The Crescent Gardens-located building will be sold and replaced by a four storey development at Knapping Mount.

At this current time, Harrogate’ council staff are housed in five sites - Knapping Mount, Crescent Gardens, Scottsdale House, Victoria Park House and Springfield Gardens.

This new building would allow all 500 staff members operate from the same location.

The move to Knapping Mount will cost £8.7m, after money raised from the sale of four existing buildings is subtracted from the total.

The council has claimed that the relocation will also save £1m per year, through efficiencies and lower energy costs.

Richard Cooper, leader of the Harrogate Borough Council said, via ITV: “Operating from five offices in the town centre is costly and inefficient. The creation of a new headquarters at our Knapping Mount site will bring a range of benefits for the district.

“We have carefully considered the financial implications from the initial cost of building to the long term operational costs, and I believe that the creation of a new council headquarters will allow us to achieve long term savings. The council will be able to improve the service we offer by operating from one location, allow us to invest more in the services that really matter to our customers, ensure funding is available for other important district projects and to be more environmentally friendly.”
