Co-op plans to boost staff numbers across UK stores
The Food arm of the Co-operative Group, which has offices in Manchester, is hoping to create up to 1,000 new jobs as it continues to invest in its expanding convenience business.
The company is increasing staff numbers during peak times in a bid to meet the demands of new consumer trends. In a recently published report, Co-operative Food discovered that around 52% of consumers prefer to shop often for smaller amounts instead of going on a big weekly shopping trip.
Now, the Co-op is seeking additional store managers, team leaders and customer team members, with in-store responsibilities including checkout operations, cash handling and stock control.
The group’s retail chief executive, Steve Murrells, said: “The modern busy lifestyle is leading to more consumers adopting a grazing mentality which sees them shop in a little and often way each week.
“The Co-op is investing to transform and grow its convenience business as it works towards its ambition of being the UK’s number one convenience retailer. With a store in every postal area and, in the heart of communities, the Co-op is uniquely placed to meet changing consumer needs.”
Steve added: “We are looking for colleagues with the commitment, drive and enthusiasm to create a consistently great experience for our members and customers as shopping habits change and people increasingly buy what they need, when they need it, conveniently.”
The Co-op is currently working to transform its existing convenience stores and acquire new properties. The firm, which has more than 2,800 shops in the UK, recently announced £125m of investment to lower the price of its everyday essentials.
