Manchester’s Squire Patton Boggs advises sports nutrition company in latest acquisition
International law firm Squire Patton Boggs, which has an office in Manchester, has advised nutrition firm Sport-ph in its recent acquisition of The Protein Works, a Cheshire-based sports nutrition brand.
Acting on behalf of Sport-ph, the team from Squire Patton Boggs was led by Giles Chesher, a corporate partner, and assisted by Michael Atherton and Matthew Canipa, with partner Patrick Ford providing tax advice.
Giles Chesher commented: “The sports nutrition and supplements market is dynamic and fast growing, worth in excess of £300m in the UK alone.
“The Protein Works has successfully developed a strong brand, built on the launch of innovative new product lines, and this transaction will support further growth opportunities across Europe.”
The purchase of The Protein Works marks the second acquisition in the last 12 months for Sport-ph, as the firm acquired Hull-based PhD Nutrition in November last year. Sport-ph, which is aiming to create a sports nutrition group that operates across Europe, has the backing of B&B Investment Partners.
After two and a half years of operation, The Protein Works has grown to become the UK’s second largest web-based sports nutrition brand and is an official supplier of Everton Football Club.
Following the acquisition, The Protein Works’ founders Nick Smith, Karl Jacobie and Mark Coxhead are set to become board members and shareholders within the extended company.
