Aldi given green light in £150million Bradford scheme
Planning approval has been granted for a budget supermarket and drive through restaurant at Bradford’s multi-million pound regeneration scheme, New Bolton Woods.
The developers are currently in advanced discussions with Aldi to create the new 18,000sq ft food store, with parking for 150 cars, a second smaller store and a drive through restaurant which will create over 50 jobs in the area.
The ambitious £150 million New Bolton Woods scheme, which covers more than 30 hectares of land, is being jointly developed by regeneration specialists Urbo Regeneration and Bradford Metropolitan District Council, known collectively as Canal Road Urban Village Ltd (CRUVL).
The new supermarket and restaurant are part of Phase 2 of the New Bolton Woods development which will create up to 1000 high quality homes and a new local centre comprising retail units, a primary school, crèche / nursery and health centre.
The new £6 million food store and restaurant, which have been designed by the award winning firm of Yorkshire architects The Harris Partnership, are an important step forward for the development as there are currently no local restaurant and large retail amenities close to Bolton Woods. Work on the new food store will begin later this year and it is expected to open in Autumn 2016.
Plans for the development went to a final public consultation in June 2014 and were met with widespread support to provide the investment in new houses, shops and other facilities expected in a thriving place.
Welcoming planning approval for the new food store Peter Swallow a Director of Urbo and Canal Road Urban Village Ltd, said: “This is a very significant step forward in the regeneration of New Bolton Woods.”
Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe added I’m pleased the application has been successful. It will not only support the regeneration of Bolton Woods but will also create 50 new jobs.“
The regeneration of the area will create a thriving new neighbourhood for the City, supporting its forecast growth in the economy over the next 12 months. Currently New Bolton Woods remains the largest new homes development in the City and will play a significant part in addressing the serious housing problems facing many individuals and families in the district.
Commenting on the granting of permission for the new food store, Jon Suckley, Partner at planning consultants HOW Planning said: “This is another hugely exciting development being brought forward by Urbo Regeneration and a fantastic prospect for Bradford. It will provide a new food store which will help create an anchor a new local centre at New Bolton Woods.”
Phase 1 of the New Bolton Woods development began last year when lead developer Urbo Regeneration and partner Skipton Properties created 50 new homes which are now all sold with residents eagerly awaiting the new local amenities. If planning permission is granted for Phase 2 then work to create the exciting new sustainable ‘urban village’ will begin in spring 2016.
With Bradford’s economy forecast to grow to more than £9 billion by 2016, making the district the third largest in Yorkshire and the Humber, the New Bolton Woods development will be an important contributor in providing new homes for employees of major companies choosing to invest in the city.
