Coventry solicitor boosts skills with new accreditation

A Coventry solicitor has been recognised for her expertise in advising older clients after earning a professional accreditation.

Michelle Gavin, partner and head of wills, trusts and probate at Band Hatton Button in Warwick Road, Coventry, has received the Older Client Care in Practice (OCCP) award.

The award, which is accredited by a leading lawyer training organisation Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), recognises experience in advising older and vulnerable clients including understanding the potential physical and cognitive limitations that may affect the way advice is given.

To receive accreditation, all participants are required to sit an exam which covers three key areas, client relationship, older client communication and interview techniques, and undue influence, safeguarding and protecting the clients’ interests.

Michelle said: “Having been a full member of SFE for over eight years, I recognised the value of gaining accreditation and saw it as an extra endorsement of my skills.

“It was an opportunity to not only introduce a new layer to my membership but to also develop interpersonal skills that are highly valuable in the profession.

“The certificate reinforces Band Hatton Button’s commitment to investing in its staff as well as the firm’s reputation for providing service excellence to all clients.”

Michelle is also a member of the worldwide association, the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP), a group of lawyers and accountants which promotes best practice and professional integrity to those who advise and deal with families.

Philip Costigan, senior partner at the firm, added: “We are very pleased that Michelle has been awarded the Older Client Care in Practice Award which demonstrates her ability to guide older and more vulnerable clients through the legal process.

“She has the specialist client care skills needed to support older and vulnerable clients and is experienced in understanding the additional needs and considerations that are often required.

“Band Hatton Button places great emphasis on the importance of communication and building strong relationships with clients and the accreditation from Solicitors for the Elderly enables us to add another string to our bow.”
