Fareshare North East receives further support for locals

~FareShare North East, managed by national charity, Changing Lives, redirects surplus good quality food donations from suppliers including ASDA, Greggs, Tesco, The Co-op and Brakes Foodservice. Demand for FareShare services has continued to rise and as a result, the new funding has been provided to help direct even more food to people in our communities who need it the most.

This generous support to FareShare has enabled the charity to store and distribute a larger amount of food donations to more charities and projects. Already in County Durham, a number of community projects benefit from the service and receive regular deliveries of food to their premises. Currently, community cafes, homeless shelters, breakfast clubs, after school clubs and community centres benefit from the service. By accessing food via FareShare North East for a nominal fee, the community projects save money on their normal food bills.

FareShare provides 25 tonnes of food, which is the equivalent weight of 12 cars, per month to over 80 community projects across the North East. Approximately 4,000 people benefit from the food each week.

Michael Shields, General Manager of FareShare North East said:

“Its fantastic news that FareShare has received additional support in order to expand our work. We provide a vital service to many communities and now the scheme is open to all areas of County Durham. This will help us to provide more food to more community projects, enabling them to support more of their clients with either hot meals or food parcels and save the project money in the process.”
