Anfield stadium’s Main Stand overhaul hits new milestone

A project to significantly increase the capacity of the Main Stand at Anfield stadium in Liverpool has hit a new milestone with the installation of a 140m-long truss.

Friday (July 24) saw two cranes measuring 252ft lift the truss, which weighs 650 tonnes, into place over the stand. According to a report from Liverpool Football Club, securing the truss is one of the most complex phases of the Main Stand redevelopment work.

Due for completion during the 2016-17 football season, the Anfield redevelopment efforts will see the stadium’s capacity increase from 45,276 to 54,000.

Once the project is finished, the Main Stand will be one of Europe’s largest all-seater single stands and will be visible on the Liverpool skyline from a number of points in the city.

Built in 1916 as part of a major revamp of the stadium, the Main Stand was overhauled in 1973 with an extension, the removal of its old roof and the installation of floodlights.
