Rotary add some extra drive to golf day
NEWCASTLE Rotary Club members took to the fairway with Calvert Trust Kielder for a charity golf day which raised more than £7,000 to support services for disabled people, their families and carers.
The 17th Calvert Trust Kielder annual golf day attracted many teams from local businesses and also Rotary teams from Newcastle and Edinburgh who went into battle at Ponteland Golf Club for the overall winner’s trophy and titles such as ‘beat the pro’ and ‘straightest drive’.
Helped along the way by Rotary club volunteers who provided help with registration, refreshments and even massages, it was Stocksfield’s Garwen Enterprises who took first place in the end with Hexham’s Motor Bodies and Rainton Construction taking commendable second and third positions.
Bruce McNiven from Newcastle Rotary supported on the day and said: “The Rotary Club of Newcastle upon Tyne has a long association with Calvert Trust Kielder and a high regard for its work.
“When the opportunity to support their golf day came up we were delighted to help through team entries and volunteers who ensured the day ran as smoothly as possible for everyone taking part.
“This event was an important part of the programme for our Centenary Year which kicked off with a charity concert at the Sage Gateshead and other events which will run through to June 2015 to celebrate 100 years of help in the local community and internationally.”
Corporate & Events fundraiser at Calvert Trust Kielder Hazel Ditchburn organised the event. She said: “Support from Newcastle’s Rotary Club has helped us double our fundraising total for the golf day this year. It was a great day made even better by the Rotary club members support and help - the massages went down a treat with weary golfers too!
“We are very grateful to all of the local and regional businesses and organisations that continue to support us, our fundraising and our work with disabled adults and children.”
The next big fundraiser for Calvert Trust Kielder is the annual Calvert Ball taking place on Friday 9 October 2015 at Hilton Newcastle Gateshead. For further information visit www.calvert-trust.org.uk/thecalvertball or call the fundraising team on 01434 250232.
