New builds to enhance Manchester’s rental market

The rental market in Hulme, Manchester, could soon be boosted with the addition of 166 new-build homes.

If approval is given for the Hulme Living project, a mix of three-bed townhouses and two-bedroom apartments will be constructed across two sites at Royce Road and Leaf Street.

Community development organisation One Manchester, which is responsible for more than 12,500 homes across Manchester’s south and east, is leading the proposal.

One Manchester’s chief executive, Dave Power, said: “This is a very exciting project to get started and it’s a small step in the right direction as Greater Manchester desperately needs to be building at least 10,000 new homes per year in order to play its part in tackling the national housing crisis.

“I’m pleased to say that the initiative also extends beyond the practicalities of a typical housebuilding scheme; it is a tremendous opportunity to help transform people’s lives and boost the residential community in Hulme and surrounding areas.”

Royce Road will see the construction of 66 two-bed apartments designed by Salford-based OMI Architects, while Leaf Street will be enhanced with 100 homes by Dutch architects Mecanoo. The latter will comprise a mix of three-bed townhouses and two-bed apartments.

The plan represents One Manchester’s first new-build scheme since it was formed earlier in 2015 when City South Manchester Housing Trust and Eastlands Homes merged.
