This week’s Yorkshire appointments

Mark Morritt, Paul Tomlinson & Christopher Gallagher; EY

EY has added three equity partners in Yorkshire as the firm targets expansion in the region.

Mark Morritt has entered the partnership internally, while Paul Tomlinson and Christopher Gallagher have been appointed from Deloitte and PwC respectively.

Mark, who joined the firm in 2005, specialises in auditing multinational listed groups and acting as reporting accountant for corporate transactions.

Paul, who returns to EY having first joined in 1998, will become part of the firm’s Financial Services Advisory Performance Improvement team.

Based in Yorkshire, he will advise clients across the UK insurance industry on business design and transformation, including building new insurance operations, achieving cost reductions and improving claims performance.

Christopher Gallagher has joined EY’s Advisory team across Yorkshire and the North West to lead its Internal Audit, Risk and Controls practice in the North.

Specialist recruitment consultancy Calibre Search has strengthened its construction division with the appointment of experienced consultants Sam Sykes and Elliot Barwick.

John Holliday, Jonathan Erkulis & Trust Ncube; Brewster Bye Architects

Leeds-based architecture practice, Brewster Bye Architects has appointed three new team members.

John Holliday joins Headingley-based firm as a senior architecture technologist, Jonathan Erkulis joins as an architectural assistant and Trust Ncube joins as the firm’s first architectural technologist apprentice.

John, who is from Bradford, previously worked on a wide range of projects in the education and public sectors during a 26 year career at four other architectural firms. With experience of leading teams and working on complex projects from inception to completion, he has worked on a number of high-profile projects for nurseries, schools, universities, nursing homes, sports centres, police headquarters as well as residential housing and sheltered housing projects.

Jonathan, who is from Leeds, graduated from Northumbria University with a First Class Honours degree in Architecture and has worked in project management for a national property specialist since graduating. He will be working towards his Part II diploma at Brewster Bye and developing his specialism for transforming unique conversion and listed buildings into bespoke residential homes.

18-year old Trust, who is from Meanwood, is currently completing a BTEC extended Diploma in Engineering Level 3 at Leeds College of Building. He is the first apprentice to join Brewster Bye as part of a new partnership with Leeds College of Building.

Managing Director Chris Austin says: “We are delighted to be creating three new positions at the firm, taking our total team number to 27. All three appointments will support the on-going growth of the business which was established 22 years ago and is currently going from strength to strength.

“Having worked closely with Leeds College of Building to develop an apprenticeship scheme at our firm it is a pleasure to welcome our very first apprentice. We are very passionate about developing young talent as well as attracting more senior experienced members to our team and we are confident John, Jonathan and Trust will all bring news skills and expertise to their roles.”

Sam Sykes & Elliot Barwick, Calibre

Leeds-based Calibre’s construction division headed by Mark Brennan has made two major appointments.

Newly-appointed Sam Sykes has seven years’ experience working within the built environment and will specialise in the placement of white collar managerial and commercial personnel.

Elliot Barwick joins as the team’s dedicated construction contracting consultant, supplying both contract and permanent professionals including managers, surveyors, planners and directors.

Mark said: “With the imminent start of major schemes in Yorkshire, and building on a sound foundation of SME business, we have already seen an increase in activity with contractors recruiting for all levels,”

Lee Murdoch, Crafthouse

A renowned chef has been appointed to head up the Crafthouse restaurant and sister venue Angelia in Leeds.

Lee Murdoch joins from the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort in Abu Dhabi, where he was Chef de Cuisine at the award-winning 55&5th The Grill restaurant.

Scottish-born Lee established his career at the 5-star Turnberry Resort Hotel where he won an Award of Excellence from the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts. He then ran the restaurant at Malta’s Grand Excelsior Hotel, before moving to Abu Dhabi where 55&5th The Grill won BBC Good Food’s Restaurant of the Year award.

Lee takes the role of Executive Head Chef at the D&D-owned Crafthouse and Angelia restaurants in the city’s Trinity retail arena.

Mark Morris, General Manager at Angelica and Crafthouse, said: “The appointment of Lee is a coup not just for us, but for the region. He has already made immediate changes to ingredients, composition and cooking style ahead of the launch of an entirely new menu next month.

“His vision for the direction of our menus – with a particular focus on Yorkshire provenance – matched with his undoubted culinary expertise will elevate our offer and enhance our reputation yet further.”

Supplier to the builders’ merchants industry, racking specialist Filplastic Ltd has bolstered its sales team with a host of new appointments.

The Yorkshire-based company is targeting potential clients in the north and midlands by recruiting business development managers Gary Winter and Tony Corrigan.

To support the new recruits, Filplastic has also taken on sales assistants Georgie Tooke and Karen Feasby who will work from the company’s head office in Eastrington, East Yorkshire.

Sarah Costello joins the accounts team and is also based at Filplastic’s head office.

Mr Corrigan brings more than 30 years’ experience of the materials handling sector to the company, having worked for some the industry’s biggest names.

Hailing from Cheshire, his patch covers the North West and north-west midlands including Lancashire, North Wales, south to Stafford and east to the Pennines.

Mr Corrigan said: “Filplastic is very focused on the customers’ requirements and needs no matter what the size of company or the size and value of any enquiry or project. The emphasis is finding the right solutions for the customer’s needs, and in my experience that leads to much more satisfactory outcomes.”

Gary Winter, who lives in North Lincolnshire, started his career in the racking industry 30 years ago but moved on to work in commercial interiors supplying steel partitioning and mezzanine flooring.

He said: “Although the industry has changed a bit since I started, I have a significant number of contacts which are still very relevant.

“The amount of companies and organisations that need racking is huge, from the more obvious examples such as builders’ merchants and distribution centres to universities and local authorities, so the potential for growth for Filplastic is huge. I am really excited to be a part of that.”

Paul Taylor, managing director of Filplastic, welcomed the new recruits to the team.

“Tony and Gary are key appointments for us who will push the Filplastic brand in the north and the midlands,” he said.

“With the support from Georgie, Karen and Sarah we are in great shape to capitalise on an upturn in construction and retail industries, which ultimately drive demand for our products.”

Edwin Shaw, Knight Frank

The Sheffield office of Knight Frank has strengthened its team after appointing its latest associate.

Edwin Shaw has joined the valuations team after working for a Leeds-based commercial property agency and will work across a broad portfolio of commercial valuations throughout South Yorkshire.

The appointment also coincides with the Sheffield office’s appointment of 21-year-old Harry Elliot, a BSc (Hons) Planning Real Estate and Development student on a 12 month internship from The University of Northumbria, and hot on the heels of Knight Frank being voted in the top 15 UK companies for graduate recruitment.

Vivienne Wild, Clarion

Leeds law firm Clarion is continuing to build on the success of its private client practice with the appointment of Vivienne Wild as partner.

Having qualified as a solicitor over 25 years ago, Viv (pictured right) has extensive experience as a private client lawyer. She joins from the private wealth team of international law firm Stephenson Harwood where she acted mainly for some of the firm’s international, high net worth private clients in relation to their estate planning, UK and offshore trusts, wills and cross-border issues.

Viv specialises in advising the owners of SMEs, directors of large corporates and high earning professionals in relation to their estate and succession planning, dealing with their will and trust requirements and advising on asset protection and UK inheritance tax mitigation.

Justine Osmotherley (pictured left), partner and head of Clarion’s private client services team, comments, “With her specialist knowledge of helping business owners and high net worth individuals with wealth and succession planning, Viv will be a fantastic addition to the team.

Alistair Martin Smith, Town Centre Securities

Town Centre Securities PLC (TCS) has appointed Alistair Martin Smith as a Senior Asset Manager. Based at the company’s headquarters in Leeds, Mr Smith will be responsible for the Manchester and Leeds development portfolio and related investment.

Alistair has over 10 years’ experience in the industry, and joins from Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc where he was responsible for the management and enhancement of the investment and development portfolio.

Edward Ziff, chairman and chief executive of TCS commented: “Alistair’s appointment reflects our strategy of growing a strong team of specialists. Alistair will help deliver projects like the Whitehall Riverside Scheme and work on strategy and development to ensure funds are invested where there is likely to be growth.”

Tony Haigh & Adam Simpson, Miller Homes

Miller Homes has made two new appointments to its senior management team as business continues to prosper.

Miller Homes Yorkshire Region based at Calder Park, Wakefield, has appointed Tony Haigh as Area Health and Safety Manager and Adam Simpson as Senior Land Manager as the housebuilder reports unprecedented sales figures for the first half of the year.

Andrew Davies, Operations Director at Miller Homes Yorkshire said:“We are over 85% forward sold for the year and demand for our homes is running high,

“With this in mind we felt that now was the right time to continue investing in staff recruitment in Health and Safety, with a designated Regional Advisor and also a Senior Land Manager to press ahead with securing more new development land in Yorkshire.”

Tony, 49, from Darwen Lancashire joins the Miller Homes team from another nationwide housebuilder. Having spent many years in the Army, Tony has a plethora of skills making him ideally suited to this role.

Meanwhile, Adam, 40, from Harrogate has enjoyed a career that has seen him work in all aspects of land and property acquisition and management, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to consolidate Miller Homes’ success in Yorkshire.
