Manchester named UK's best city for sports

Manchester has been named the sporting capital of the UK following research published by Gloucestershire and Bath universities.

Topping a ranking of 48 UK cities to be recognised as the Greatest Sporting City 2015, Manchester was found to be the best place for sporting organisations and events, with the categories examined including value for money, transport links and venues.

The city beat its closest rival London in an analysis, commissioned by sports website ESPN.co.uk, that spanned several months and gathered views through an online survey, as well as the opinions of focus groups.

Commenting on the results, the deputy leader of Manchester City Council, Councillor Bernard Priest, said: “Hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games created a lasting legacy allowing us to build a sporting infrastructure that is second to none and I’m proud that has been recognised by sports fans across the country.

“The region’s connection to football obviously played a part in us being awarded this accolade but it’s not just the beautiful game that makes Manchester a great sporting city.

“The variety of sport taking place in the city along with our transport links and local talent were all significant factors.”

Speaking further, Cllr Priest said he believes Manchester’s “world class” venues helped it to top the ranking, naming facilities such as the Etihad Stadium, the National Cycle Centre, the National Squash Centre and the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
