The Soho of the North: How a Newcastle company is making waves in the UK’s video production industry

The East Wing Studio, a TV film and video production company based in Newcastle, is attracting post production work from established national names such as Jools Holland, Ralph Lauren, Emirates, Virgin Money, Fred Perry, Bet365 and Drama 24.

Following the high demand for its services, The East Wing plans to expand facilities, adding another edit suite and sound studio, as well as recruiting more editors and sound technicians to support the existing team.

Historically, most post production work in the UK has been housed in London’s Soho district. Nevertheless, over the last few years Rich McCoull, owner of The East Wing Studios, has seen a significant amount of new business relocating from London’s traditional post production houses.

The company has worked on a number of high profile projects. Some examples include completing music composition for global brands like Ralph Lauren, Emirates and Newcastle, video editing and colour grade for Jools Holland and fashion brand Fred Perry and working on tv productions such as 24: Live another Day, Fox TV’s Da Vinci’s Demons, ITV’s Miss Marple, Sky1’s Strikeback and BBC’s Wolfblood.

Rich McCoull explained: “Even companies in the North East have historically sent much of their post production work down to London. This has changed over the last few years and more than ever, with location being less important than experience or margins, there is a significant increase in work coming into the studio.

“Our clients have given us great testimonials and the general feedback is that we work with them personally, at all stages of their projects. Clients don’t think that they’re on a conveyor belt and appreciate the individual focus that each project is given by the team.”
