Further £2m international rail investment in Doncaster

Schwihag (UK) Limited is the latest in a series of international rail companies to expand its operations in Doncaster.

Schwihag is investing £2m at a site in Thorne after securing backing from Doncaster Council’s Inward Investment Incentive Scheme.

The company plans to renovate and extend one of the buildings at the site, safeguarding the current 25-strong workforce and create four new jobs.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “I am delighted that my pledge to deliver jobs and growth is paying dividends with the Inward Investment Incentive Scheme helping to seal the deal which sees Schwihag commit to developing its manufacturing capacity here in Doncaster. If a company has expansion and relocation plans they should speak to our Business Doncaster team.”

Schwihag’s decision to expand in Doncaster will help it deliver on existing major contracts with the likes of Network Rail, London Underground and Irish Rail and also enable the company to expand its product range into export markets.

Jones continued: “Our rail sector is going from strength to strength and Schwihag recognised the commercial benefits of locating in the town which has a growing cluster of international rail firms. With the National College for High Speed Rail opening in Doncaster in 2017, there will be many other rail and engineering firms deciding to locate to the town. The future of rail in Doncaster is looking very bright indeed.”

Future growth could be even more dramatic with High Speed Rail developments as Schwihag is one of the few companies in the world with the cushioning technology required for the new ballast free slab-track technology of High Speed Rail, potentially creating more jobs.

Karl Schwiede, owner of Schwihag said: “The key determining factor in expanding in Doncaster was the Council’s support through the new Inward Investment Incentive scheme. This has been really important to us in terms of demonstrating that Doncaster supports business and the rail sector in particular. The rail sector is flourishing in Doncaster and with the National College for High Speed Rail coming to the town there are significant benefits for our business from being located here.”
