Historic CastleGate Granted Premises Licence
CastleGate in Newcastle’s city centre has today been granted a premises licence to increase the number of events it is able to hold in its venue each year. The historic building, one of the largest venues of its kind in the city centre, dates back to 1903, and has in recent years become a popular and successful conference venue primarily to the business and conferencing market.
Today’s news means the former generating house to the city’s tram network can expand to offer the venue to more regular wedding and entertainment events.
The activities permitted within the venue’s premises licence include plays, films, indoor sporting events, live and recorded music and dance performances. Supply of alcohol is allowed until 23.00 and late night refreshment until 23:30.
Ed Morrow, CastleGate’s managing director, said “we run a conference service business from our building and we have been keen to increase the number of wedding receptions that we do, offering couples a rate that allows them not to enter their married life in debt.”
“We needed to do more than the 12 temporary events notices a year allowed. This gives us a bit more freedom. We’re not changing the thrust of what we’re doing and are happy to reassure local residents and businesses that we have no plans to become a nightclub! We are very pleased with today’s news because it means we can offer even more people our Blank Canvas wedding package, helping them to enjoy their wedding reception in a great historic venue at a remarkable price.”
